Evolution runs the world’s most extensive R&D program, but the vast majority of its efforts remain invisible. Arcadia Science is systematizing the exploration of the last 3.5 billion years of life through a combination of basic and applied research.

Ryan York will describe Arcadia’s development of a full-stack, evolution-informed drug discovery framework. They’re doing basic work on evolutionary theory to inform the next generation of biological machine learning models. An iterative “closed loop” between these computational predictions and experimental validation guides the design of novel biologics. The efficiency and accuracy of validation efforts are increased by leveraging a diverse portfolio of non-model species. An organism-agnostic experimental toolkit allows Arcadia to phenotype and perturb biology over broad swaths of the tree of life.

By fusing evolutionary biology, machine learning, specialized hardware development, and a radical commitment to open-source resource sharing, Arcadia is attempting to build a scalable platform that translates the structure of evolution into the next generation of biomedical breakthroughs.

About the Speaker

Dr. Ryan York leads Arcadia Science’s platform. His team uses an evolutionary lens to expand the scope, accuracy, and efficiency of biomedical research. Ryan completed a postdoc in neurobiology and a Ph.D. in evolutionary biology, both at Stanford. He is a committed advocate of open science.
