Stem cell research could help aging muscles
Irina Conboy describes how stem cells may be used to rebuild muscle tissue after damage from exercise.
Researchers at UC Berkeley are hoping to turn back some of the effects of time, on aging muscles. The breakthrough involves the use of stem cells, to help rebuild muscle tissue after exercise.
You might have guessed the muscles of college athletes rebuild faster than their middle aged counterparts.
But now, researchers at UC Berkeley have traced the causes to the behavior of stem cells.
"When we asked muscle stem cells to rebuild the muscle young muscle stem cells did it very well and old muscle stem cells failed," said Irina Conboy from UC Berkeley. KGO-TV (video)
