QB3 member Amy Herr, UC Berkeley professor of bioengineering, has won a Sloan Research Fellowship. Herr is one of six Berkeley faculty to receive the fellowships, awarded annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The fellowships provide $50,000 over two years to support fundamental research by faculty in the early stages of their careers. This year, 118 fellowships were awarded in the United States and Canada.
Herr’s research focuses on developing novel engineering approaches to analyze complex biological systems. She seeks both solutions to fundamental scientific questions and applications for real-world problems. Currently her laboratory is developing microfluidic technology for assessing protein expression in complex samples; assays to identify protein biomarkers of disease; and microengineered gels for analyzing tiny biological samples in medical clinics.
