    Photoswitch is developing small-molecule therapeutics for serious retinal degenerative diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa and age-related macular degeneration. In both of these diseases, the photoreceptors of the retina, the rod and cone cells, die but the remaining retinal cells remain intact. Our approach, developed with the collaboration of the UC Berkeley Nanomedicine Development Center for the Optical Control of Biological Function involves applying “molecular photoswitches”, small photoisomerizable molecules, to the remaining retinal cells, restoring light-sensitivity to the retina.
