QB3 GarageIncubating the next generation of great companies.
California's success stems in part from entrepreneurs who willingly defy the odds in pursuit of important missions. In 1938 Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, working in their Palo Alto garage, launched one of the great technology companies of the 20th century. Since then, the story has repeated with variations many times—including the launch of Apple Computer from Steve Jobs's garage. However, actual garages are not suitable for experiments in modern biology. Biotech entrepreneurs have therefore had a much harder time moving from idea to prototype, and this has reduced the rate of innovation.
To address this challenge, QB3 has created two incubators that allow very small companies access to modern laboratory space in close proximity to QB3 investigators. These incubators, the QB3 Garage@UCSF (opened in 2006) and the QB3 Garage@Berkeley (opened in 2010) are the biological laboratory equivalent of garages: small spaces for inventive entrepreneurs to lay the foundations for companies that may spearhead new California industries, especially in the San Francisco Bay Area. CriteriaSpace is limited. The QB3 Garage@Berkeley and the QB3 Garage@UCSF are only open to spin-outs from QB3 or University of California laboratories, or to companies working in close collaboration with QB3 investigators. Space is available at market rates for pre-commercial development for periods of up to two years. Interested groups are encouraged to contact Douglas Crawford. In the NewsGold
