The Synthetic Biology Engineering Research Center (Synberc), initiated by QB3 and funded by the National Science Foundation, is a multi-institutional effort to lay the foundation for the field of synthetic biology.

Synberc brings together many of the pioneers of synthetic biology, including prominent biologists and engineers from UC Berkeley, UCSF, MIT, and Harvard. Synberc’s aim is to develop the understanding and technology to build biological components and assemble them into integrated systems; to train specialists in synthetic biology; and to educate the public about benefits and potential risks.

Education, training, and outreach are high priorities for Synberc investigators, who have developed educational programs targeted to high school, undergraduate, and graduate level students. Outreach to women and underrepresented minorities is a particular focus. Visit Synberc’s education page for more information.
