QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Program
The application period for the 2009 QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is now closed.
Program Description At Berkeley, QB3 is looking to identify and support exceptional postdoctoral fellows pursing research in areas of interest to QB3. To that end, QB3 invites promising young scientists who have or who will soon have their Ph.D. to apply to the QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. Applicants must have the sponsorship of at least one QB3-Berkeley faculty affiliate.
QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellows will be selected on their potential for success as an independent researcher, exceptional academic record, and relevance of their research interests to QB3’s mission. Preference will be given to candidates whose research interests span multiple QB3 labs at any QB3 campus. Please note that current UC Berkeley postdocs are not eligible to apply for the program.
Each QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellow is hired as a postdoctoral fellow in QB3 and performs his or her research in space and facilities provided by the sponsoring QB3-Berkeley faculty affiliate. QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellows are paid by QB3 and are provided a very competitive postdoctoral fellow salary reflecting the independence and exceptional qualifications of candidates. In addition to salary support of $60K per year, QB3-Berkeley provides each QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellow with an annual budget of $50K to support research expenses. QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellows are appointed for a two-year term.
QB3 faculty affiliate sponsors for QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellows are expected to support each fellow in the following ways:
- support the expenses of the QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellows in excess of the $50K annual funding provided to the Fellow for such expenses (applies to QB3-Berkeley faculty affiliate sponsor identified as Primary Faculty Sponsor)
- provide space in their assigned space allocation (applies to QB3-Berkeley faculty affiliate sponsor identified as Primary Faculty Sponsor)
- incorporate the QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellow into the fabric of the host faculty’s lab and research activities
- ensure that the QB3-Berkeley Distinguished Fellow is included in campus life activities, as well as relevant QB3 and departmental activities
The deadline for receipt of application is June 30, 2008. A selection committee will review applications and make a final selection shortly after the deadline. The earliest start date will be August 2008, and the latest will be August 2009. Incomplete applications will not be processed. All nominations must be submitted through the QB3 online submission process.
Non-US citizen candidates must obtain J-1 Scholar visa status for the period of their QB3-Berkeley Fellowship. QB3-Berkeley is unable to support H1B visa status for fellow appointments.
QB3-Berkeley will provide:
- annual salary of $60,000
- annual research fund of $50,000
- maximum of $3,000 for travel to Berkeley and moving expenses
- benefits including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance - additional information regarding benefits can be found at http://vspa.berkeley.edu/
Fellowships are awarded for two years, generally beginning August 1. A third year extension is possible following a comprehensive review of progress. Candidates must accept the fellowship within 90 days of the notice of award.
