• UCSC: Reading the Human Genome
Location: 180 Engineering 2, The Simularium
Type: Lecture
Time: 02:00PM to 03:30PM
Sydney Brenner, 2002 Nobel Laureate, Salk Institute

The human genome has not reached mutational equilibrium. Rather, we can view it as one state in a dynamic process. This provides an explanation of the isochores. The high GC components are the parts of the genome that have been evolving more slowly and have preserved their structure for most of their history (>500,000 years). This implies that the genome contains information from the past. Brenner is now trying to reconstruct the evolution of the retina from the information in the genome, in pursuit of the objective of finding reduced genetic descriptions of complex organisms.
