• UCSC: Drug Development Targeted against Tropical Neglected Diseases: Natural Products as a Resource
Location: TBD
Type: Workshop
Time: 02:00PM to 07:00PM
This is one in a series of workshops on global health in the 21st Century to be held in response to the initiative for creating a UC School of Global Health. In an informal environment, workshop participants will conceptualize a plan for a Center of Excellence (COE) targeting neglected tropical diseases. One long-term aim is to develop new chemotherapeutics using natural products as the seed for further discovery. Natural products represent a vast, untapped resource that should stimulate many future discoveries. This workshop will bring together a diverse group that includes those experienced in drug development and natural products chemistry, experts in the biology and biochemistry of the parasites, and physician scientists familiar with the clinical aspects of parasitic diseases. The workshop will lay groundwork for collaborations to take advantage of the wealth of natural products resources worldwide, yielding new drug leads for neglected tropical diseases and interfacing logically with other UC-wide efforts to preserve environments from which natural products are harvested. Successful COEs will receive significant support from UCOP, including new FTEs to involved campuses and perhaps philanthropic funding; they will also provide novel opportunities for training students and for new inter-campus collaborations.
